Simplifying Square Roots – A Number Line Activity
This is a “no” calculator activity. Students place the given square root expressions on a number line.
This activity works as a practice assignment in Grade 8 for CCSS Standard NSA.2: Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions
It works as a warm-up or review activity in Algebra I, Algebra II to CCSS HSN.RN.A.2 to continue developing students understanding of rational and irrational numbers.
Ways to use this activity:
1) There is a printable worksheet ready to be copied.
2) There are 20 cards with square roots on them. Copy and give one to each student. Ask students to line up in order. (Note: some cards represent the same value!)
3) Use cards for a card sort – students work in pairs to line up cards on their desks to make a number line. Give blank cards – ask students to add additional radicals that will fit on the number line.
4) Students can sort the cards into two groups: perfect squares, non-perfect squares.
