Description

A complete, print-ready Algebra 1 lesson on simplifying square roots — a card-sort discovery, factor-tee practice, guided notes, leveled practice, a self-checking Mystery Picture, exit ticket, and quiz. Includes a Do-Now spiral review. Every answer key included. TEKS & CCSS aligned.

Teach simplifying square roots the way that sticks — by hunting the perfect square hiding inside the radicand.

Students sort square-root cards, build factor tees, and discover that a radical simplifies only when the radicand has a perfect-square factor greater than 1. The lesson moves from numbers (√12 = 2√3) to variable radicands (√(72x³) = 6x√(2x)) with a clean factor-tee method throughout. Built on a prep period and tested with real Algebra 1 students.

What's included (27-page PDF + editable PowerPoint):

  • Do-Now spiral review — a 5-minute warm-up (2 per page) that spirals exponent rules and perfect squares.
  • Teacher lesson plan — pacing, teacher moves, misconceptions; a sub or new teacher can run it.
  • Square-root card-sort set — printable manipulatives (perfect squares + non-perfect squares).
  • Exploration sheet with factor tees and the "square factor hiding inside" sort.
  • Guided / consolidation notes — vocabulary, worked examples, and the common-mistake warning (√20 = 2√5, not 4√5).
  • Decide · Simplify · Challenge practice.
  • Homework (16 problems: numbers and variables).
  • Crack-the-Code Mystery Picture — self-checking, color-by-answer reveal.
  • Exit ticket + 📋 quiz.
  • Every answer key included (fully worked).
  • Editable PowerPoint lesson deck.

Standards: TEKS A.11(A) · CCSS 8.EE.A.2 (builds toward HSN-RN.A.2).

BONUS: free access to the companion web app at themathtoolbox.com — 15+ classroom tools on the same standards-aligned question bank. ★ PREMIUM BONUS: unlock additional puzzle generators at themathtoolbox.com/unlock.
