This project explores the theory of Biorhythms while helping students practice graphing and finding sine functions. They need to have a knowledge of period, amplitude, vertical and phase shifts for the sine wave. The essential question students are asked to answer is "Can you mathematically predict what kind of day you're going to have?"
This project includes a grading rubric, Biorhythm explanation pages, Guided Practice, and two worksheets with questions regarding their graphs. I also included the constructivist lesson explanation. Additionally, there is an Excel file to help check students' calculations. Just input their birthdate, and voilà! It does the calculation for you.
Before beginning this project, I have students complete a chart where they rate how they feel physically, emotionally, and intellectually. In addition, I post the questions online, and encourage them to use the Internet to explore this area. As this is an individual assignment, each student's graph will differ, so you will have to grade the questions with respect to their graphs. To help with this, I created an Excel Quick Check worksheet. When you enter the student's birthday, it will calculate the number of days alive, complete cycles and remainders for each biorhythm. This will make grading very quick. Additionally, you can download a free online program called, "Free and Easy Biorhythm Calculator" to assist in checking their graphs.
