These 5 subtraction worksheets support the pictorial (drawing level) introduced after students have built the concepts with place value blocks, and before they are solving problems with numbers alone (abstract level.) This is excellent for reinforcing WHY we regroup!! Use these after you're done teaching the "hands on" for each concept. Also, great for enrichment/challenge level work!
-1st page: reviews drawing to solve 3 digit minus 2 digit problems. Students just write the answer in the horizontal problem after they have drawn. This introduces the term "circle and swoop"--when students circle a ten and then "swoop" draw an arrow over to the ones and draw in the ones. This shows we are trading a 10 for 1's.
2nd page: Same concept but now students solve problems vertically as they draw and show their regrouping in numbers (abstract) as they draw. Once they circle and swoop they cross out and change top numbers.
3rd pg: Regrouping 100's into 10s.
4th pg: Regrouping 1000's into 100's & 100's into 10's.
5th page: Regrouping 1000's into 100's, 100's into 10's, & 10's into 1's, also regrouping across some 0's.
