Normally, vegetable oil will sink in rubbing alcohol and will float on water. In this hands-on activity, students make a water-alcohol solution that has the same density of the oil and attempt to suspend the oil in this solution. The recipe for the solution is given, tips are provided and all the science behind the effect is explained.
When students finish they can work on the provided activity worksheet (with answer key). There is also an extension activity described where students are challenged to hover a drop of alcohol/water in the drop of the oil which is itself hovering in the larger solution! What fun!
