What is the effect of salt on an objects ability to float? Included are 2 versions of this lab:
Version 1: Students will measure how much salt it takes to make a baby carrot float in a beaker of water. Emphasis is on salinity and comparing fresh water to salt water. Intended for grades 6-7. Includes a fully editable lab worksheet and powerpoint to accompany the lab.
Version 2: Students will measure the density of fresh water, a baby carrot, and salt water. Emphasis on calculating density and the effect of density on buoyancy. Intended for grades 8-9. Includes a fully editable lab worksheet and powerpoint to accompany the lab.
Materials needed for labs: beakers, water, salt, bag of baby carrots, measuring spoons, graduated cylinder, electronic scale or triple beam balance.
