Includes: Short excerpt from the famous sermon, an Active Reading Guide for annotating and close reading, a post-reading questionnaire that checks for basic comprehension and asks for some critical thinking (4 questions), 3 Style Analysis Essay charts that assist with organization and content, a Style Analysis Essay Revision Checklist.
I have used this with AP Language and Composition students in lieu of a full-blown essay. They find it helpful and less daunting than writing an essay individually on a blank page.
Options include partner essays or small groups, which allows for useful discussion about language, tone, and theme. Of course, you can always have them write a second draft from the charts, or a final draft, using the revision checklist. I have done this as well. Students find it tedious, but it improves the depth of their writing tremendously.
