This activity is an awesome way to have students practice for the MSL's (Measures of Student Learning) or final exam. The assignment should be completed while (or after) reading an excerpt from "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards. The excerpt is not included but is found in most textbooks and online.
Students will answer ten multiple-choice questions concerning theme, mood, literary devices, purpose etc. Some of the questions draw on basic reading comprehension while others require students to draw inferences or utilize background knowledge.
For the constructed response portion, students must describe the purpose of the sermon, and support their claim with at least two pieces of textual evidence. A rubric is included. The rubric shows students how they'll be graded while also providing the teacher with grading instructions.
