The Sir Cumference book series is a great way to integrate math and literacy skills! These Sir Cumference geometry notes and activities includes 23 pages of notes and activities to go with 'SIR CUMFERENCE AND THE FIRST KNIGHT OF THE ROUND TABLE' & 'SIR CUMFERENCE AND THE GREAT KNIGHT OF ANGLELAND.' All activities are aligned with Common Core and the Virginia Standards of Learning.
For each Sir Cumference book there are questions and activities to complete while listening to the story, interactive notes covering the geometry topic/skills from the story, a hands-on activity to complete after the story, and a parent study guide on the topic/skills from the story.
The section on circles goes along with the story 'Sir Cumference and the First Knight of the Round Table.' This section includes important terms, comprehension questions to go along with 'Sir Cumference and the First Round Table,' visual representations of the parts of a circle, and interactive notes comparing various circle parts. Two activities are included. The first activity has students start by cutting out a large rectangle and then continue to cut the rectangle down into different shapes, like Sir Cumference does, as the teacher reads the story. An activity is also included requiring students to cut out circles of various sizes to measure. After measuring, students record the measurements for circumference, diameter, and radius into a chart. The chart is then used to compare relationships between radius and diameter and circumference and diameter. By the end of this section, students will be able to define and label diameter, chord, radius, and circumference. They also will know how to measure diameter, radius, and circumference and be able to explain what pi is. Finally, they will be able to explain the relationship between diameter and radius, diameter and circumference, and diameter and chord.
The section on angles and triangles complements 'Sir Cumference and the Great Knight of Angleland.' This section includes important terms, comprehension questions to go along with 'Sir Cumference and the Great Knight of Angleland,' spaces for students to draw and define the different types of angles, directions on how to use a protractor, and spaces for students draw and define triangles by their angles and sides. An activity is included for students to identify different triangles based on their angles and sides. Students will then use a protractor to measure each angle on each of the triangles. The students will then add the angles on each triangle together to find what the total degrees are for each triangle. By the end of this section, students will be able to identify and define acute angle, obtuse angle, right angle, straight angle, acute triangle, obtuse triangle, right triangle, scalene triangle, isosceles triangle, and equilateral triangle. Students will also be able to measure angles using a protractor.
