I struggled with finding fun assignments for my students while reading The Odyssey, but this assignment is one of the ones that my students enjoy. It helps them use their creativity, work together, and have fun with making poetry. That’s the trick: they don’t know that they are actually just writing a poem. Granted, it’s a marketing poem, but they do like it. It changes up the monotony of the The Odyssey.
I assign this before we read the ‘Siren’ section of the poem. I give them time to work together in class, outside of class, and bring in props and costumes if they want.
This assignment goes along with the argumentative writing standard (persuasion) and speaking and listening standards. I grade on answering the prompt, creativity, meeting the line requirement, and extra points for props, dress up, and dance routines.
