Teacher Information

“The companion to the #1 New York Times Bestseller Smile.” Scholastic

Genre: Graphic Novel; Narrative Nonfiction: Memoir

Will Eisner Winner - Comic Industry Awards

Sisters, told through a graphic novel format, is the story of Raina and her relationship with her little sister, Amara. More specifically, this story is about one summer road trip their family took to Colorado (present day) and flashbacks of their life growing up together.

Due to the graphic novel format, this is a great story for upper elementary/middle school students. The story is full of topics that the reader will relate to in their own life. It could be a great starting point to open discussion about real everyday life issues that occur when living as a family under one roof.

Sequence Frames: The format for this text alternates between present day and flashbacks. There are 21 sections, beginning and ending with present day. Eleven sections in present; ten sections in flashbacks. The flashbacks correlate with the present day story.

Sequence frames allow the students to reflect on their reading in a graphic format, similar to the actual text. Drawing in the frames sequentially will also aid in the reader’s understanding of the text structure and how the present can sometimes be explained by knowledge of the past.

This makes an ideal high interest/low readability book and response to reading unit.

You may use the section summaries as a guide when reviewing learners’ sequence frames.

Vocabulary

**Vocabulary options: 1) students find unfamiliar words to define; 2) students are given a list of words to define while reading; 3) students are given a list of words with definitions to refer to while reading.

Definitions of vocabulary words from http://www.wordcentral.com/

**Print multiple copies of the Frayer Vocabulary Template for students to use while reading Sisters. You will probably want 10-11 copies per student. (Two templates per sheet of paper)

OR Use the Frayer Vocabulary Template as a model for learners to use while writing vocabulary information in their writers' notebooks.

Questions

**Many questions are similar to Fountas and PInnell Levels R Guided Reading Comprehension Questions.

**Note: Answers to questions are given to help the teacher guide the discussion - especially if the teacher has not had time to read the text. Allow students to discuss their answers, probing for evidence from the text. A few questions do not include an answer, as the answers are interpretations from the text. It is each teacher’s discretion as to assigning some or all of the questions, written or oral responses.

*If you are working with a younger, first semester third grade group, this unit will best be led by a teacher. Research has shown that comprehension is improved when readers discuss text with the guidance of a teacher. In addition, readers gain better comprehension of the text when responding to the text in writing and then discussing the text. Keep in mind, during independent reading time, learners should be reading text for more of the time period than responding to the text.
