No matter what we think of the controversial topic, we can all agree that we have students who need to feel better about themselves sitting in our classrooms. If you don't have those students, you probably have students who need to develop their empathy. This cooperative activity is designed to do both. It provides information about our current population and societal forces at work.
Students read one story from a series of four narratives-- three immigrants and one philanthropist-- and complete the guided reading activity. They then move on to the Jigsaw to get the big picture. Using their notes from the Jigsaw activity, students write a cause-effect essay describing the impact of philanthropy on our society. Answer keys for everything and a rubric for the essay make this a perfect background building supplement.
