Here’s a great way to connect reading and math with your early readers! This set of six emergent level readers will support your math teaching in these topics:
* One More (K.CC.7, K. OA.2)
* Addition Strategies/Adding doubles (1.OA.3)
* Missing Addends/ Complements of Ten (K.OA.4)
* Geometric Shapes (K.G.2)
* Data Collection (1.MD.4)
* Sums of Ten (K.OA.4)

The pages of each book are printed two to each sheet, making
them very easy to assemble as books – just print collated pages, make one horizontal cut, and staple the books together.

You’ll find these books useful for small group teaching in both reading and math, and also to include in your students’ book boxes for frequent rereading.

The books feature simple patterned text, with small variations in pattern to promote careful attention to print.

For each book, there’s also a full page teaching poster (in both color and b/w) to reinforce the math topic and to set the text pattern for reading. These pages are great for use either with your document camera or in a small group setting.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
