A big part of writing success for young authors is having the opportunity to talk about their writing. The best way to do this is through conferencing with their teacher and/or peers.
This file contains a handy-dandy Six Traits of Writing checklist to use when holding writing conferences. The first page has a space for the student's name and two conference checklists. The second page has just two conference checklists. I usually run one copy of the first page for each student and numerous copies of the second page. I like to have at least one to two conferences per writing assignment. So it takes several of page two for each student per grading period.
Each checklist has a section for each of the six writing traits and a mini-checklist for each trait. There is also a section for teacher anecdotal comments. These are very good for leading the teacher-student conferences. I make sure that the checklist is available to each student as we conference about his/her writing.
