Riddle time: What do nouns, commas, and similes all have in common? The answer is they're all things I wish my sixth graders hadn't forgotten over the summer! This summer packet, designed for incoming sixth graders, covers English/Language Arts topics so that I get my students learning and practicing their skills for four weeks before they even enter my classroom for the summer!
**NOTE: For an additional FREE WEEK'S worth of content, check out the listing HERE
! This would be FIVE WEEKS worth of content combined!**
When constructing this packet, I examined the CCSS standards for fifth and sixth grade to determine, realistically, what concepts the students should already know and what concepts I would like them to practice before coming into sixth grade. Although the ideas came from my own classroom, they are all CCSS aligned so this is usable in ANY sixth grade classroom. Using this is as simple as passing out the packets to students before they leave for the year!
Included in the PDF is the complete student packet, ready to print out, and the answer key with answers and hints for every exercise. No textbooks or supplementary materials are needed - the concepts in the packet are explained to students with brief notes and examples before exercises are given.
This packet is designed so that each day of the week covers the same topic. There are four weeks worth of activities, and the weekly calendar is as follows:
Monday - Parts of Speech
Thursday: Literary Devices
Friday: Critical Thinking Puzzles
The topics covered are as follows:
Parts of Speech: nouns/verbs, adjectives, adverbs, & conjunctions
Vocabulary: comprehension strategies with four sixth grade level words
Punctuation: end marks, semi-colons, commas, & colons
Literary Devices: imagery, similes, hyperbole, & alliteration
Critical Thinking Puzzles: semantics, logic, critical thinking skills
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you!
