This book study can be used as a whole class read aloud, or for use in a literature circle. There are A LOT of common core standards used in this unit. I included 5th grade standards, but all of the lessons easily meet 6th and 7th grade ELA standards. The unit is divided into 11 lessons. I recommend you allow 1.5 hours for each lesson, but you can divide them up if you need to. Each lesson includes a focus standard, vocabulary, before reading, during reading, and after reading activities. There are two close readings of works by Edgar Allan Poe that are also included. I was really surprised by how excited my students were to close read "The Raven" and "A Tell Tale Heart." This book really made these classic pieces of literature relevant and exciting for students!
Day by day lesson plans for 11 days (or more)
Focus standard for each day aligned with Common Core
Vocabulary words and activities for each day
Comprehension Questions (for whole group or individual)
Close Readings (that the kids like!)
Worksheets and graphic organizers

Lessons include objectives such as inferring, making connections, figurative language, personal and physical character traits, comparing and contrasting, and etc.
Skeleton Creek is an extremely engaging book for students in grades 5, 6, and 7. The book is a journal written by one of the main characters, while other main character keeps a video diary of their investigation of strange occurrences in their home town. The kids LOVE the idea that they get to read and watch the book!
Please let me know if you have any questions or need help with this unit. I used it in my own classroom and it was extremely effective. The kids learned a lot, and we covered a lot of standards with ease!
