Ideal for the multi-level LINC or ESL classroom, this assessment is one of a series of assessments on employment that allows the multi-level classroom to work on the same assessment topic while each learner receives an assessment that meets the Canadian Language Benchmark criteria for their CLB reading level.

This assessment comes ready to print and distribute to your CLB3 and 4 learners for a day of assessment.
This assessment will assess the vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension abilities of learners based on employment vocabulary that appear on job ads. Please ensure that you have done a lesson on selecting appropriate job ads and learners have had prior practice reading job ads in class. (Examples of vocabulary to have covered prior to assessment: receptionist, job ad, classifieds, classified ad, full-time, part-time, contact, email, urgent, hired, phone number, message, interview, expression - get in touch, phrasal verb - set-up) before assessing on this topic.
As with any assessment, please double check that the reading assessment given to a learner specifically matches the reading assessment level that learner is working towards. For example, if a learner is at a CLB3 level, this learner will receive the CLB 4 reading assessment, as this is the level the learner is working towards earning.
Ensure that you provide newspapers and printed online ads for the learners to search through. Scissors are also helpful for learners to cut out ads they wish to hold onto for their assessment. You may also want to provide a package of highlighters so learners can highlight emails and phone numbers.
*CLB3 learners must be able to find 7 phone numbers and 7 emails for full marks.
*CLB4 learners must be able to find 8 phone numbers and 8 emails for full marks.
*Note: While the theme of employment is typically reserved for higher CLB levels (5 and 6), it is essential that your class is being taught the same theme and working on the same assessment at the same time for organization and consistency among their learners and especially for group discussion purposes among learners to enhance learning. With differentiated assessments, assessment can be made possible for the multi-level class.
