The Skills Tracker System is a comprehensive guide for special educators and parents of children with special needs. Based on the Ohio Department of Education's Academic Standards and Indicators, grades K-4, this educational instrument is not only a comprehensive assessment tool, but also a dynamic outline that helps teachers and parents clearly individualize learning plans for their students.
The Skills Tracker System is divided into two distinct parts:
1. Standards and Indicators Check Sheets
2. Master Grid.
The Standards and Indicators Check Sheets are grouped into Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies Standards. The pages in the check sheets section can be printed out and placed in a binder or cut and pasted on wall charts to track a student's progress daily or weekly. Indicators are broken down by color-coded grade level.
Since students with special needs often have splintered skills, this feature of the check sheets section allows teachers and parents to pinpoint each child's strengths to develop a baseline. From there, adults will also reveal a clear-cut outline of tasks by subject and standard that children still need to learn to achieve grade-level mastery.
The Master Grid is a macro representation of the same information in the check sheets section. However, this information is stored and updated electronically in an Excel format. And, updates are made less frequently. The grid has electronic portability and can be emailed to teachers, other school officials, and parents to enhance collaboration. The check sheets and grid both foster efficient lesson planning and help parents and teachers develop appropriate Individual Educations Program (IEP) goals for students who receive special education services.
