Phonics Boxes are activities formatted for the boxes available at Michaels that contain 16 smaller boxes. These activities can also be stored in 6x9 brown envelopes or any other way you would like to store them. Each “box” contains a sound or syllable sort and a flashcard activity/game. The cards can also be used just as flashcards and, if laminated, you can have your students use dry erase markers to highlight phonic concepts (such as vowels, digraphs, blends, etc.) There is a title card for the front of the box or envelope and directions. I use double-sided tape to adhere them.

“Slam Dunk” is an activity for the two sounds of “s” as a suffix (/s/, /z/). This activity includes only closed syllables, consonants, and digraphs. It contains no blends. Header cards are included for /s/ and /z/. 48 sorting cards with words with the suffix “s” are included. For the syllable sort, students decide which sound the “s” makes and place it under the correct sound, /s/ or /z/. Use only the 48 basketball cards for the sort.

For the game “Slam Dunk”, shuffle the 48 basketball cards and the 24 Slam Dunk cards.
Variation 1: Students take turns reading the cards. If they get a Slam Dunk card they put one card back. The student with the most cards at the end is the winner. Use less Slam Dunk cards for this variation.
Variation 2: One student reads cards until he/she gets a Slam Dunk card, then play passes to the next player. The student with the most cards at the end is the winner!
