Civil War Slavery RAFT Activity. This is a RAFT strategy activity to use with the topic of slavery before the beginning of the Civil War. Some roles that the students may become are: slaves, abolitionists, southern plantation owners, and even Abraham Lincoln himself! I have included the student direction sheet, and a student example so you can see what a final product can look like. I also have included a rubric that you can use to evaluate the product.
A RAFT is an effective way to get your students thinking beyond simple comprehension questions. It puts your students in a role that they have to become related to the topic of study. They then think critically about that role and write about their feelings to an audience. This is a higher level thinking activity that is easily adaptable for many areas.
