Product Description
This informational text briefly explains the history of slavery. As students read they are also introduced to the importance and the cons of slavery. Three follow-up questions ensure students understood what they read and that they use critical thinking skills while reading.

The text is 640-680 Lexile Level, approximately 5th grade reading level with short paragraphs. This would be a good text for 4th-5th graders or for low level readers in 7th-8th grade. Also good for higher level special education.

The comprehension questions involve higher level thinking skills, including contrasting and analyzing. At the end of the activity, students should understand the origin of slavery in the Americas, why slavery was important in the southern colonies/states, and know the beginnings of abolitionism.
