Product Description
Slave Ship Simulation Combined Levels

This simulation of the horrific conditions aboard slave ships is based on the design specifications of the British ship “Brookes” and excerpts from the journal of Dr. Alexander Falconbridge. Falconbridge was a British surgeon who was forced to sail the Middle Passage in order to avoid being sentenced to debtor’s prison. He nearly died from a respiratory illness he caught on his fourth and final voyage. In this simulation, students recreate the design elements of a slave ship that made the Middle Passage so cruel to African captives and often deadly for all. Afterward, the students sit in their re-creation while a facilitator reads excerpts from Falconbridge’s journal and challenges students to analyze the underlying social and belief systems that allowed perpetuation of this “crime against humanity” for over 350 years. This editable version of the simulation includes the combined content of the middle school and high school editions to allow customization for your classroom. This exercise is designed to maximize emphasis on common core objectives and alignment is specified for each grade level.

This product includes:

➢ Editable version including both middle and high school level content and instructions
➢ Blueprints for the slave ship Brookes
➢ Student materials with complete instructions for recreating critical aspects of the Brookes in your classroom
➢ Dramatic excerpts from Falconbridge’s journal that illustrate the degree of brutality required to sustain this system of slavery
