This activity is used to debrief high school students following enactment of Shawneen Morrison's Slave Ship Simulation. The debriefing is designed to expand beyond factual and emotional awareness of the injustices of slavery to a greater understanding of social and political factors that enabled the brutality of the slave industry to endure. It also serves as a foray into the concepts of Modern Racism and Institutional Racism. Supplemental primary source documents, including an audio-taped interview with a former slave, are used as support materials for the analysis. This debriefing is one of a suite of accessory lessons that can be used to expand or contract the centrality of the Slave Ship Simulation in a unit on slavery, racism, or the Civil War. I have included some of the ideas I highlight in italics for the teacher’s information. No doubt, many other directions could be pursued to bring the lesson into alignment with highlighted ideas in your curriculum. Common Core Standard emphases are denoted.
