This simulation poignantly demonstrates the horrific conditions aboard slave ships as students are challenged to analyze the social, belief, and economic systems that perpetuated this crime against humanity for over 350 years. It is based on the design specifications of the British ship “Brookes” and excerpts from the journal of a British surgeon, Dr. Alexander Falconbridge, who was forced to sail the Middle Passage in order to avoid being sentenced to debtor’s prison. Students recreate the cargo hold from the Brookes and sit in it while a facilitator uses journal passages to illustrate the cruel and sadistic practices of the slave trade. Falconbridge’s journal graphically describes the conditions and social dynamics that resulted in the deaths of over half of the human cargo, killed much of the indentured crew, nearly killed him, and motivated his conversion to the abolitionist movement during his fourth and final voyage. This exercise is designed to maximize emphasis on common core objectives and powerfully motivate high-level analysis. Common core alignment is specified for each grade level.
