This Common Core aligned unit is a social studies and ELA integrated unit. Using literature and informational texts, students explore topics such as slavery, the Underground Railroad, Jim Crow Laws, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, the Greensboro Sit-Ins, and Martin Luther King Junior. Students will also be asked to practice Common Core skills such as: identify main ideas, determine moods from illustrations, ask and answer questions, and determine point of view. At the end of the unit, students will produce a presentation using a free program called Photo Story that includes audio and graphics. A timeline for the teacher to display is also included.
