As slavery grew it became more and more controversial. As determined as the South was to keep it, the North was equally determined to get rid of it. Citizens of various persuasions actively participated in helping slaves find freedom through the Underground Railroad.

This movement helped thousands of slaves find freedom by escaping the South to the North or even Canada.
