In this project/simulation students take on the role of defense attorneys who are defending a group or runaway slaves. In order to win their case, students must learn about the legal, economic, and social aspects of slavery in the U.S. in order to defend their clients.
Using their knowledge of the Antebellum South, they will argue against the morality of slavery while learning about how slave owners defended the south’s “peculiar institution” During the prep phase of the trial, they will have to research, think collaboratively, and critically analyze the arguments of the other side, all important Common Core and history skills. They will also develop persuasive wiring skills, learn about the judicial process, evaluate a source of information, and be able to analyze a document from multiple points of view.
