In this very common-core oriented lesson, students view a variety of quotations to answer the question: "Why did the US Constitution allow slavery when 'all men are created equal?" In a world where Americans just fought for freedom from Great Britain under that same slogan, now we see many of our founding fathers justify their beliefs in maintaining the institution of slavery. Students read quotes from several founding fathers who attended the Constitutional Convention and helped draft our founding document - then students analyze three different sources to understand how slavery was justified. All information will be recorded on the included handout and a full key is included! This product is 1:1 Google compatible -- just share through Google or assign via Google Classroom!
