To learn about conditions on board a slave ship, and the method by which Africans were sold into slavery.
1 class period
In this lesson, students will read a story about the slave trade.
There are words, names, and terms in the story that are missing. They are in bold print in parentheses. Each class member needs to decide which words in bold print in parentheses should be written in the spaces in order to complete the sentences.
Have the students work individually during class time. They will learn a great deal about the slave trade.
After completing the section on "The Slave Trade," continue with the section on "Gustavus Vassa Crosses the Atlantic." This is a primary source account. Assign the questions that follow it.
Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment.
