Working with word families is an effective way to get your students reading. It also helps them learn to decode longer words. Learning about the different word families is a fundamental part of reading instruction. It is important to draw students’ attention to the familiar chunk in words because they are representations of patterns that we use in our everyday language. When our students become proficient in the single syllable words, they will also become proficient in decoding longer words.
This set is designed to help your students become better readers by mastering these important skills. It includes 22 colorful, hands on Slide a Word Cards for your students to practice their short vowel family skills and familiar chunks in words. Each card has a picture that matches with the particular word family. There are 37 word strips total with most of the cards having two strips. Copy them on card stock, laminate and cut out the shape. Use a sharp knife to cut along the two black lines then place a strip from the back through the front. The students will be able to slide the strip to reveal letters to form words. I have also included blank strips for you to add letters. You can also make a laminated set and provide dry erase markets to use as wipe off mats for your students.
The accompanying matching worksheets allow the students to write words they made and a sentence. Students can also draw pictures for the words they made. These versatile cards can be used in your word work and literacy centers as well as your guided groups.
These are the included word families:
at, an, ap, ag, am, ad, et, est, en, ed, it, ig, ip, in, ot, og, op, ox, un, ut, ug, uck
