An osmosis investigation lab using a real world scenario.
Time: 55 minutes
Teacher Prep: Requires at least 3 eggs, vinegar, corn syrup, water, and salt . If you have a large class (30 students), I would recommend having 3 stations, with 3 eggs each. Remove the egg shell by submerging eggs in vinegar for 2 days. Take the mass of each egg prior to placing eggs in either salt water, water, or corn syrup. After 1 day in the solution, record the final mass of each egg. Give the final and inital mass at each "egg observation station".
Teacher Notes: As a bell ringer, have the kids read the introduction paragraph and highlight three facts that are relevant to the experiment. Review the three facts and then assess knowledge of osmosis with the prelab. Review the prelab with the class(especially images) before releasing them to view the eggs. Students can use the images from page 2 as a "key" when viewing each egg to determine the solution type.
