"Smack" by M. Burgess is an excellent teen issues selection about gateway drug use and the rapid descent into heroin addiction. This is an excellent read for students who are drawn to 'living on the edge' but are certain THEY will NEVER succumb to hard drug use. Most of the characters in the book come from dysfunctional backgrounds they are trying to escape, only to get trapped in another. One character, Gemma just wants to 'walk on the wild side' and believes she will be able to walk away whenever she wants, unscathed. The characters believe 'just a little' will be okay and it quickly spirals out of control. This book shows the real pain and agony of being an addict that cannot kick the habit. Students will see the denial and delusional thinking of an addict, and the endless extremes an addict will go through to get just one more hit. This should be an eye opener as well as a deterrent for teen readers. Teachers will not have to beg a student to finish reading SMACK.
