This project is perfect for having students work in groups of 5-8 on different American plays. The plays I used were ones that I was able to get 5-8 copies per class period at cheap prices. However, you can use whichever plays you have access to. The plays I used were August Wilson’s "The Piano Lesson," Arthur Miller’s "Death of a Salesman," Arthur Miller’s "The Crucible," Tennessee Williams’ "A Streetcar Named Desire," Thornton Wilder’s "Our Town," and Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee‘s "Inherit the Wind." Students read the play (and I also gave them tests to assess their comprehension--this was individual though--and then they chose a scene to memorize and perform. In addition, their presentation included background on the playwright and the play and its influence on American culture and history. Annotated Bibliographies on the research were also required. The document includes scoring rubrics for each aspect of the project. The tests are not included.
