If you are looking for a way to get your students to work together to really dissect a text, this protocol is for you! You can (and should) use this cooperative learning strategy many times throughout a unit, and students will have different and rich discussions each time.
Students are asked to come to discussion prepared with 1) a passage to discuss and 2) a "level 2" question about the passage. A level 2 question is a higher order thinking question based on the passage.
This package includes: directions for the protocol, the role cards, a worksheet asking students to rank and grade each group member's contributions, and a reflection, which I always assign for homework.
