Product Description

This small group guided reading lesson plan is based off of the book, "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. This is a Level L book, which is typically a level for mid-year, on-level second graders.

This book's main lesson focus for reading is inferencing although there are other comprehension skills tied into the lesson.

I created these instant guided reading lesson plans because the last thing busy teachers have time for is to sit down and sift through books for our small groups, on top of all the requirements we have to fulfill in the school day.

I call these lesson plans 'instant' because they require no thinking on your part! I have sifted through the book, come up with rigorous/higher order thinking questions, and activities for you to do with your students during your short, but precious small group time.

Each of my guided reading lesson plans include:

  • topics that can be or are covered in the lesson for various contents
  • before reading talking points such as the genre, a summary of the story, and having students make text to self connections before reading.
  • vocabulary cards with the word, picture, and definition ready to go so you can explain the words before reading without having any additional prep-work involved
  • HOT (higher order thinking) question to think about during reading
  • CPQ (comprehension purpose question) to think about during reading
  • the lesson plan gives you questions you can ask during the reading, or once students have read independently, you can go back and ask. These questions cover different comprehension skills.
  • after reading questions
  • a thinking map
  • writing extensions - each lesson includes a writing prompt and fun paper for students to write on if you choose
  • a comprehension quick check quiz that students can take independently so the teacher can check for mastery of the concepts reviewed in the lesson. There are 2 copies per page to save on paper.

If you do not have a set of this title, I encourage you to look on your campus for a set, or order your own. I've ordered my own sets for extremely cheap or FREE from Scholastic Book Club (read more info on Page 2 of the document). Or you can always find books reasonably priced on Amazon or at your local resell book shop.

I personally laminate all of the materials provided in the document to save and reuse year after year! :) I really hope you find these lesson plans helpful in your small groups.
