Use this checklist during small group instruction, supplemental groups or intervention groups, to monitor the skills and strategies you have taught and expect them to use. As you listen to each student read during the rereading of familiar text or during the reading of a new book, check off what you observe and don't observe and make notes to discuss when the time is up. Immediately following the reading, discuss the positive strategies and skills you observed them use. Then, discuss what you did not see or strategies you observed being misused. Set expectations for their next reading session. I find this gives the students a clear understanding of the importance of using their strategies and skills you have covered. These change as the students progress. Before each reading session, the students should be able to tell you what you are watching for as they read. This checklist has shown to be very useful for me and has helped my students to use their strategies more effectively.
