Do you need a writing activity / center for kiddos who are non-readers? Up and Running! is just that. Created for students who cannot work independently, or who struggle to do so, these writing assignments provide an inductive, scaffolded approach that gets them on the road to working on their own. Students compose complete sentence answers to question-prompts by using words from the questions themselves and the “short-answers” provided in the assignment. Stumbling blocks, such as spelling and not-knowing-what-to-write, are thereby eliminated, so that working memories can focus only on manipulating and transposing words.
In my experience, I’ve found that most students who don’t work independently really do want to. The assignments included in this intervention have made that possible for many of mine over the years. The process is simple to learn, but does require a certain amount of teacher guidance, especially at first. And yes, you’ll need to help them with the vocabulary, but once they’ve experienced a little success, you’ll see their enthusiasm and drive begin to kick-in.
Level A is targeted at students who read at the K or early 1st grade level. The questions in Level A are worded with easy vocabulary, and the responses do not require students to change verb tenses. In Level B, a slightly more challenging vocabulary and sentence structures are used.
