Explanatory writing is so fun to teach! Engage your students in composing easy-to-follow explanatory texts. This lesson begins with a pre-assessment and student self-evaluation to highlight the importance of explanatory text features, such as numbered steps, sequence words, second-person POV, and clear language. This lesson also includes the following effective teaching practices:
- opportunity for student self-evaluation and peer-evaluation
- the use of a mentor text to model a writing strategy
- the use of an anchor chart to scaffold students in writing their explanatory texts (including student involvement in creating the anchor chart!)
- the opportunity for students to share their writing
- and more!
This lesson is intended for a small group of third grade students but could easily be adapted for whole group or for the 3-5 grade band.
