Students will investigate beginning sounds, by sorting cookies into cookie jars. Students choose a cookie and match it to the correct beginning sound jar. There are 26 jars, one for each letter of the alphabet. The pictures for the vowel sounds, all use the short vowel sound. Letter x uses the x sound at the end of the word. There are 5 cookies for each beginning sound jar.
Choose the sounds that students need to revise. Play as a group or independently. Play as a whole group warm up, by choosing the sounds you want to focus on and put the jars in the middle of the circle. Give each student a cookie card. Students take turns to match their cookie to the correct jar. Play as a small group, by choosing 6 cookie jars (or the number of students in the group). Put all the matching cookies face down on the table. Students take it in turns to flip over a card and see if it matches their jar. If it does not match, they turn the card back over.
To prepare this game, print, laminate and cut out the pieces. You may wish to keep each sound set in a little bag, so it is easy to choose the pieces that you wish to use.
