Each Smart Phonics poem introduces a new letter/sound through the medium of shared poetry. These lively, interactive and delightful poems provide auditory support from rhyme, meaning support from context and visual support from illustrations. Each poem has been written to develop word-level, sentence-level and text-level skills as well as being linked to popular curriculum topics.
Teacher Guide Notes
For each poem, conversation starting-points are provided on the page of Teacher Guide Notes. They cover consolidation activities, phonological patterns, vocabulary and language forms, print conventions, critical thinking questions and extension activities. The questions encourage students to be active, social and reflective thinkers.
Phonemic Awareness Activities
The phonemic awareness activities are based around the specific letter/sound introduced in each poem. By manipulating the Using Phonics Effectively magnetic tiles, students can apply the phonemic operations of deleting and substituting initial, medial and final sounds in CVC words, e.g. cat, hat, hot, hog, and deleting and substituting the onset and rime in words, e.g. hand, grand, sand or kick, sick, lick. These tactile activities will appeal to all students.
Activity Sheets (Printables)
These creative and stimulating activity sheets are specifically designed to engage students in active thinking and problem solving tasks based around a letter/sound focus. They are provided as A4 reproducible masters.
Games and Assessment tasks (Printables)
Four fun games have been included in this manual to help reinforce the teaching of consonants, vowels, digraphs and high frequency words. The Assessment tasks evaluate student's letter/sound knowledge and can be used for both diagnostic and summative purposes. They provide teachers with valuable assessment data as well as requiring students to evaluate their own knowledge and progress.
