These 18 smart board exercises are great for students to self-teach themselves about the Road to the Civil War. It focuses on six key ideas: The Missouri Compromise, The Nullification Crisis, The Compromise of 1850, The Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the actions of abolitionists.
While working on this activity, students will complete Venn Diagrams, match images to names, match events to dates, test themselves, use key vocabulary, engage in close reading, arrange sentences to form a paragraph and more. This was created to maximize the functions of a smart board and the smart board activities that are available in the software.
This is recommended as an activity that 2-3 students would complete alone. It can be done as a whole class, but it is much more effective when students are working in small groups alone at the board. This definitely increases the fun and rigor of the activity.
Again, it can be done as a whole class, but it is not designed for that.
Although this was created directly for South Carolina's 8-4.3 Standard, this would work with any class that is studying the events leading up to the Civil War.
