This extemporaneous speaking activity addresses several Common Core strands for grades 4-12: Speaking and Listening (presentation of knowledge and ideas) and Language (conventions of standard English and knowledge of language). Students use index cards, the Internet, discussion, and an activity to raise their awareness of spoken language, both generating it and listening to it. Options for follow-up activity and extension through reading (articles about what function filler speech has in psychology, gender differences, etc.), discussion, and/or reflective writing.
