What does the evidence say about working on main idea in speech therapy?

Research has found that teaching students how to summarize and find the main idea was effective in improving the understanding of text. When students were taught to read text, choose what is most important, and then express this in a shortened form, comprehension improved. (Solis et al., 2011).

Many students struggle with reading comprehension strategies, such as man idea, due to their underlying language weaknesses (lexical and syntactical). SLPs can assist students by addressing these areas which will then assist them with their reading comprehension. (Nippold, 2017).
