Snake Search! Around the World Project Based Learning: Research, Explore, & Slither

This project integrates elements of research, ELA, technology, design, and planning as students learn about snakes from all around the world.

There are 22 activities (1 page for each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research.

As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on user’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.

Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.

There are 24 printable pages. Hand them out one at a time or staple them all together at once. Choose whichever way works best in your classroom. I prefer back-to-back with staples on the side like a book.

Activities and Pages include:
-Introduction:
Informational page where students find out what they’ll be learning.

-Snake Survey:
Fun and silly survey on student interests in snakes.

-Snake Festival:
Students think and list all the different kinds of snakes they know.

-Specific Snakes:
Students will research specific snakes: anaconda, cobra, diamondback, and python.

-Snake research:
Students pick their own snakes they’d like to research from four different continents.

-Venomous Vocabulary:
Students list numberous snake vocaulary words.

-Snakestagram:
Students use social media to spread the word on snakes.

-Adaptations:
Students draw four pictures of listed snake adaptations, then choose their own.

-Around the world:
Students label six snakes and their locations around the world.

-Invasive in the Everglades:
Students research the Burmese python, invasive snake taking over the Everglades.

-Coral Snakes:
Students learn the differences of snakes and practice map skills.

-The Perfect Pet:
Students research what is needed to have a snake as a pet.

-Beauty and the Best:
Students create a list of the most beautful and deadly snakes in the world.

-The Case for Snakes:
Students research and write why snakes are important to the environment.

-Design a Snake House:
Students design a snake house building for their local zoo.

-Snake House Enclosure:
Students design a single habitat for a snake of their choice.

-Snake POV
Students will write a story of “A day in the life of a snake” from the snake’s perspective.
