Here is a challenging test for the novel, Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson. Requiring close reading of the book, the test includes four sections: character and quote matching, true and false, literary device matching, and a literary analysis essay.
For the essay, students read a short excerpt from the novel and write an analysis of Guterson's use of literary devices to characterize Kabuo Miyamoto. A key is provided for the first three sections of the assessment, and a literary analysis rubric is included for the essay. Additionally, teacher notes are included to guide the scoring of the essay. If students simply read Spark Notes, they will not be able to succeed on this test.
