Sorting objects is a great way to work on building vocabulary skills. Use the winter theme categorization mats to work on sorting by major categories (e.g., food vs. clothes) and then sorting within categories (objects in the bathroom vs. objects in the kitchen). Some snowballs may fit into more than one type which is also an excellent lesson for children.
Major Categories: animals, home, food, transportation, clothing, tools.
Transportation: road, air, sea
Animals: forest, ocean, zoo, rainforest, pond, desert, pets, arctic
Around the House: bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, garage
Food: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, desserts
Print all the pages. Cut out the background scenes. This will make it easier to mix and match the different category options. Cut out the various snowballs. You can either cut around the snowballs or cut along the grid lines. Laminate everything for durability.
Choose the categories you want to target and place the corresponding backgrounds out. Take the snowballs (five per category) and scatter them around and have the children put the snowballs on the correct background. Another option is to have the snowballs already in the background and have your students name the category. For children who can read or use the pictures in the background as cues, I will cover up the words/pictures. Included are four mats without titles so that you can sort the snowballs in additional ways. A white space has been added so you can write on the mats with a dry erase marker.
