Snowball Happy is an innovation of the poem, Jack-O Happy. Each month, I introduce a different innovation of the poem.
By January, my students have internalized the poem and realize that the last sentence is always a surprise. After reading the first five sentences, I pause and allow them to brainstorm ideas before telling them the ending.
As I teach in Southern California, and many of my students have never been in snow, I actually brought in enough ice to build a small snowman with the kids! We were sad to see him melt by the end of the day!
By the end of the year, the kids are writing their own innovations. Sometimes, it’s Puppy Happy, Flower Happy, or even Mommy Happy. As we move through the school year, the kids become more familiar with the poem and therefore more creative.
There are now 3 variations of Snowball Happy. One with color pictures and text for your library. One with black & white pictures and text for kids to color. One with only text for kids to draw and color. In addition, there are pocket chart pictures with LARGE text suitable for pocket chart or wall.
