Expect/facilitate learning to happen when kids are making paper snowflakes! This document is an investigation to learn the patterns that emerge when making paper snowflakes. Students will use this in conjunction with a virtual snowflake maker online or a snowflake maker app. Students are expected to use the app to methodically cut, open, close, cut, open, close, etc. Studying and documenting what happens when each cut is made instructs the children on patterns and symmetry. They therefore learn what cuts on the paper lead to certain patterns on the open snowflake. Children take the steps to engineer snowflakes thoughtfully. At the end of the lesson, I have students try out their patterns a real paper snowflake.
