Cover some basic artistic lettering techniques with this seasonal project. Students create a custom snowflake design using their own name or any word you like. Resources address how to create and manipulate 2-dimensional "thick" lettering or "block letters". Students experiment with merging letters together, symmetry, reflection, positive and negative space...just to name a few. I prefer to complete this project with felt pen and scissors but it can be adapted to other media as well.
A class full of custom snowflake designs can be displayed together on bulletin boards or in hallways. Its a great solution for winter door or hall decorating contests that incorporates all the students. Onlookers often admire the snowflakes for a while before even noticing that each design is made from the names of the students.
