Did you know that snowflakes come in a wide variety of shapes but that every one starts off as a hexagon? Help your students learn about the science behind snowflakes with this fun activity.
First, reproduce the 10-page mini-book in this resource. (Each page is a half-sheet. Two versions of the book are provided; the first one has shorter sentences and simpler vocabulary for younger learners.)
Students will learn how snowflakes are formed as well as what kinds of beautiful shapes are created. After reading the book to the class, let students use the four hexagon patterns in this unit to create paper snowflakes. The fourth pattern is "open-ended" so that students can experiment making their own amazing snowflake shapes!
